World No Tobacco Day Evening Seminar
-Tobacco Countermeasure: Lessons learned and Scientific Evidence for Future Actions-
The Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) will hold an Evening Seminar on May 30. In this seminar, we will discuss issues relating to the amendment of the Health Promotion Act. This policy aims to strengthen passive smoking prevention and ensure that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s actions to comply with the consensus of a “tobacco-free” Olympics at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. Momentum is needed to change the tobacco policy. And as such, we will convene a discussion based on current scientific evidence, and real experience of political conflicts and public relations issues.

HGPI first convened an Urgent Session “Critical Issues in Tobacco Policy – Promotion of Health and Price Policy” in 2009. And since then, we have continuously proposed policy recommendations and worked to disseminate information related to cutting-edge tobacco policies based on the discussions with a range of stakeholders at that forum.

Proceeding this event, “World No Tobacco Day,” that will focus on raising awareness about the harmful impact of tobacco use on health globally, will take place on May 31st. During this event, we will convene multi-stakeholder discussion at national and international levels, and devise policy recommendations for Japan.
